Star Wars’ John Boyega on the Film & Force
You may not know John Boyega yet, but you’ve definitely seen his face — on the cover of magazines, billboards, your TV screen and soon, on the big screen. “Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens,” is being called the most anticipated film of all time — set to break every box office record around the globe; John Boyega’s character Finn is the center of it. And at just 23-years-old, the world’s newest superstar is still trying to take it all in.
I met John at the “Star Wars and the Power of Costume” exhibit at Discovery Times Square. He immediately whipped out his phone and started Snapchatting memorabilia. He spends much of our time together cracking jokes about his inability to reveal secrets from the film, giving knowing winks and nods to the camera. (Diehard “Star Wars” fans will tell you director and screenwriter J.J. Abrams has done an extraordinary job keeping the movie under lock and key.)
John himself only just saw the film for the first time recently, “It’s amazing, it’s amazing and I’m not just saying that in the actory way, it’s really a genuinely good film.” One of the best things John points out about the new film? The balance between the old and new generations. The original characters have returned for the new film with Harrison Ford reprising his role of Han Solo, Carrie Fisher as Princess Leia, Mark Hamill as Luke Skywalker, and of course, Chewbacca. Luke has been noticeably absent from all promotional material, but the real question fans have is — where is Luke Skywalker? Still, John’s lips were sealed, “Luke is somewhere.”
